About this guide to home project dumpsters

This page covers residential dumpster rental from MAC Dumpsters in Middle River, MD. It explains what house cleanouts and remodels put in a container, how much that debris weighs, and whether your job needs our 10 yard or 15 yard. It also covers what can't go in, when a driveway container needs a permit, and what a home rental costs, for homeowners across the Baltimore area.

What a house cleanout or remodel puts in the container

Home jobs fill a dumpster with two very different kinds of debris. Cleanouts produce household contents: furniture, boxes, toys, clothes, old rugs and the things that piled up in the corners. Remodels produce building material: drywall, cabinets, flooring, tile and fixtures. Most of our residential rentals are one of these, and some are both.

Projects that send this kind of debris to a container:

  • Garage cleanout
  • Basement cleanout
  • Attic cleanout
  • Moving out or downsizing
  • Spring cleaning and decluttering
  • Kitchen tear-out
  • Bathroom tear-out
  • Carpet and flooring replacement
  • Old deck board removal

The two debris streams from a house

Household contents are bulky and full of air. A recliner or a stack of boxes takes up a lot of room and weighs little. Renovation debris is the opposite. Drywall, plaster and tile pack down tight and weigh a lot for the space they use. Knowing which one your job makes tells you whether room or weight will run out first.

How much a home load weighs

On a cleanout, you'll usually run out of room long before weight. On a remodel, weight comes first. By EPA estimates, a full 10 yard of mixed construction debris weighs 2.1 to 2.4 tons, and a full 15 yard weighs 3.1 to 3.6 tons. Our 10 yard includes 1.5 tons and our 15 yard includes 2 tons, with $125 per ton over that. Mix a tear-out with lighter household junk and you'll stay closer to the included weight.

Remodeling debris from kitchens, baths and floors

A kitchen tear-out sends cabinets, countertops, drywall, flooring and old appliances out the door. A bathroom adds a tub or shower surround, a vanity, a toilet and tile. Flooring jobs bring up carpet, pad, laminate or old hardwood. It all goes in one container, loaded in the order it comes out.

Load the heavy, flat pieces first, such as drywall and countertops, then fill the gaps with cabinets and trim. Break cabinets down where you can. A brick hearth, a concrete stoop or a mortar bed under old tile is a different story, because concrete, brick and block can't go in any MAC container. Set those aside before the container fills.

What size dumpster fits a garage cleanout?

A 10 yard fits most one-car garage cleanouts, with room for about four pickup truck loads. A two-car garage, or a garage plus a basement, fits better in a 15 yard at about six loads. At MAC Dumpsters, the 10 yard includes 1.5 tons and the 15 yard includes 2 tons, and garage junk rarely gets near either number.

MAC Dumpsters 10 yard roll-off dumpster

10 yard for one space at a time

The 10 yard roll-off suits a single room, a one-car garage, an attic or a small shed's worth of stuff. That's a volume job, not a weight job, so the 1.5 tons included usually goes further than the space. At 12 feet long, it's also our best fit for a short driveway or a rowhome parking pad.

MAC Dumpsters 15 yard roll-off dumpster

15 yard for several rooms or a remodel

The 15 yard dumpster rental is the size we put on multi-room cleanouts and most kitchen and bath remodels. It holds about six pickup loads and includes 2 tons, which gives mixed renovation debris more weight to work with. It's also the size our customers book most. Emptying an entire house is a bigger job, and our whole-house cleanout containers page sizes it.

Estimates assume standard 33-gallon trash bags and a full-size pickup bed loaded level with the sides. Actual capacity depends on the material and how it's loaded. Included tonnage applies no matter how full the dumpster looks, and weight over it is billed per ton.

Household items we can't haul away

MAC Dumpsters roll-off container set in a narrow alley

Every garage and basement has a few things that can't ride in a roll-off. Pull these out before you start loading:

  • Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and anything else with freon
  • Paint, including half-used cans on the garage shelf
  • Hazardous materials
  • Concrete, brick, block, asphalt and dirt

Some common household items can go in with a fee: tires at $15 each, mattresses and box springs at $30 each, and TVs, computers and non-freon appliances like washers and dryers at $35 each. Check our full list of accepted and prohibited items if something's in doubt, or call before it goes in.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in my driveway?

Usually not. In Baltimore County, unincorporated Harford County and Anne Arundel County, a dumpster on your own driveway or property needs no permit. A container on the street or another public right-of-way does, and getting that permit is up to you. In Baltimore City rowhome blocks, the street is often the only spot, so plan for a permit there.

A few towns set their own rules. Bel Air doesn't allow dumpsters on grass or other pervious surfaces, and Havre de Grace residents should check with the city before booking. Our permit guide by jurisdiction lists who issues permits in each area we serve.

When to have the dumpster dropped off

Have the container arrive the day you start, not before. Your 14 days count from delivery day, weekends included, so a container that sits empty while you get organized is using up rental time. For a remodel, book it to land the morning demolition starts.

Clear the drop spot the day before. Move cars, bikes and trash cans, and look up for low wires and branches. Load level with the top of the container. An overfilled container may not be hauled until the extra comes off, because loose debris can fall onto the road.

From online order to pickup

Book online through our cart and pick your delivery day, or call (410) 205-5330. Order by noon for the best chance at same-day delivery, depending on availability. Our hook-lift truck slides the container straight back into the spot you've picked.

The truck typically needs about 50 feet of straight-line room to back in, 12 to 14 feet overhead and 10 to 12 feet of width. Those are typical numbers, not minimums, so call if your spot is tight. The container can sit on any surface except inside Bel Air town limits, where grass and other pervious surfaces are off limits. When you're done loading, text us and we'll pick it up.

Is it worth it to rent a dumpster?

For a home project that makes more than a couple of pickup loads, yes. A 10 yard from MAC Dumpsters costs $375 and covers delivery, pickup, 14 days and 1.5 tons, which is about four truckloads you don't have to haul yourself. A 15 yard costs $450 with 2 tons. You load on your own schedule instead of making runs to the dump.

A home rental runs $375 to $450 for the two sizes most house jobs use. The only charges that can be added are published: $125 per ton over the included weight, $25 per day after day 14, and the per-item fees for tires, mattresses and e-waste. Keep the container 3 days or less and code 3DAY takes $50 off. Every rate is on our pricing and rental terms page.

Residential dumpster questions

How do I prepare for dumpster delivery?

Pick the spot, clear it and make sure the truck has a straight path in. Move cars and trash cans, and check for low wires or branches over the spot. If the space is tight, call us before delivery day so we can plan the placement.

Is it illegal to throw furniture away in a dumpster?

No, putting your own furniture in a dumpster you've rented is fine. Furniture counts as household junk, which MAC Dumpsters accepts in every size. Mattresses and box springs are accepted too, at $30 each.

Can a dumpster go on my lawn?

Yes, in most places. MAC Dumpsters can set a container on any surface, including grass. The exception is inside Bel Air town limits, where town code doesn't allow dumpsters on grass or other pervious surfaces.

Is renting a dumpster cheaper than junk removal?

For a cleanout you load yourself, a dumpster usually costs less, because you pay for the container instead of a crew's time. A 10 yard from MAC Dumpsters is $375 with 1.5 tons and 14 days included. We only drop off and haul the container, so if you can't do the lifting, a junk removal service may suit you better.

Can I put old carpet in a dumpster?

Yes. Old carpet and pad are accepted in all three MAC Dumpsters sizes. Roll each piece tight and tape it so it lies flat. Carpet gets heavy fast if it's wet, so keep it covered if rain is coming.
