Types of Dumpsters

The main types of dumpsters are roll-off containers, dropped off for a project or a longer term, and front-load and rear-load bins, emptied on a garbage route. Open-top and hook-lift describe how a roll-off is built and moved. MAC Dumpsters rents open-top roll-offs in 10, 15 and 20 yard sizes, placed by our own hook-lift truck across the Baltimore area.

Here's how each type works, who uses it and which one fits your job. We're a roll-off dumpster rental company in Middle River, MD, so we'll say plainly which types we rent and which we don't.

Roll-off dumpsters

A roll-off is a large, open container a truck drops on your property and hauls away when it's full. It's the standard choice for cleanouts, renovations, roofing and yard work, and it's what MAC Dumpsters rents.

  • How a roll-off works

The container is dropped where you want it, you load it on your schedule, and the whole thing leaves on the truck. Our 10, 15 and 20 yard containers include 1.5, 2 or 3 tons and 14 days on site, with $125 per ton over that, weighed at the landfill and billed after the dump. We dispose of every load according to local and state regulations.

  • Roll-offs for a single project

Most rentals are one job: a garage cleanout, a kitchen tear-out, a roof. Short-term dumpster rental covers the 14-day rental and the 3DAY deal for jobs of 3 days or less.

  • Roll-offs on long-term business service

Long-term commercial service is a roll-off too. A business keeps a MAC Dumpsters container on a long-term agreement, and we swap it out when it's full. Pricing, pickup frequency and terms are set up by phone, so long-term dumpster rental starts with a call.

Open-top dumpsters

An open-top dumpster has no lid, so you can load from above or walk debris in. Every MAC Dumpsters container is an open-top roll-off.

One walk-in door on every size

Each of our containers has one hinged walk-in door, so furniture and heavy items can be wheeled or carried straight in instead of lifted over the side.

Wall heights by size

The 10 yard stands 38 inches tall, the 15 yard 48 inches and the 20 yard 64 inches. Lower walls are easier to toss over. Taller walls hold more.

How high an open-top can be loaded

Load level with the top of the container, whatever the wall height. Anything above the rim has to come off before we can haul it, because loose debris can fall onto the road.

What is a hook lift dumpster?

A hook-lift dumpster is a roll-off container moved by a truck with a hydraulic hook arm. The arm grabs a bar on the front of the container, tilts it and slides it on or off the back of the truck. MAC Dumpsters places every container this way with our own Ford F750 single-axle hook-lift.

  • Hook-lift trucks

A hook-lift pulls the container up onto the truck with one arm, with no cable to hook and winch. It sets the container straight back into the spot, which suits driveways and job sites.

  • Cable roll-off trucks

A cable truck winches the container up a tilted bed with a steel cable and rolls it off the same way. Both carry the same kind of open-top container. The difference is in how it's loaded onto the truck.

  • What the truck type means for your spot

Our truck typically needs about 50 feet of straight-line room to back in, 12 to 14 feet overhead and 10 to 12 feet of width. Dumpster placement and clearance shows how that works on a real driveway.

Roll-off vs front-load dumpster: what's the difference?

A roll-off is a large container dropped off for a project or term and hauled away whole when it's full. A front-load dumpster is a smaller bin that stays behind a business and gets emptied into a garbage truck on a set route. MAC Dumpsters rents roll-offs in 10, 15 and 20 yard sizes and does not offer front-load service.

Which one fits your job

If you're clearing out, tearing out or building, you want a roll-off. If you need everyday trash emptied every week, you want a front-load bin from a garbage service. Household and kitchen garbage belongs with regular garbage collection, not a roll-off.

What is the difference between front load and rear load dumpsters?

Both are route-service bins for ongoing trash, and the difference is how the garbage truck empties them. A front-load bin is lifted over the cab on forks, while a rear-load bin is tipped into the back of the truck. MAC Dumpsters does not offer either one. We rent open-top roll-off containers only.

Front-load dumpsters

A front-load bin sits behind a restaurant, store or apartment building. A garbage truck lifts it over the cab with two forks, dumps it and sets it back down, usually on a weekly schedule.

Rear-load dumpsters

A rear-load bin is tipped into the back of a garbage truck instead. It's common where a truck can't pull straight up to the bin, like narrow alleys and tight lots.

Not a MAC Dumpsters service

We don't rent front-load or rear-load bins and don't run a garbage route. For ongoing business service, what we offer is a roll-off on a long-term agreement, set up by phone. Dumpster rental for businesses covers how that works.

Other names for a roll-off dumpster

People search for the same container under a lot of names. These all describe the roll-off we rent:

Some people also say garbage bin rental. If you mean a container for a project, that's us. If you mean a bin for weekly kitchen trash, that's a job for regular garbage collection.

Dumpster type questions

What is a compactor dumpster?

A compactor is a stationary container with a built-in ram that crushes trash as it's loaded, used by grocery stores, warehouses and other high-volume businesses. MAC Dumpsters doesn't rent compactors. We rent open-top roll-offs in 10, 15 and 20 yard sizes for projects and long-term business service.

Is an open top dumpster the same as a roll-off?

Nearly always, yes. Most roll-offs are open-top containers, and every MAC Dumpsters container is one, with a hinged walk-in door. Our 10, 15 and 20 yard roll-offs stand 38, 48 and 64 inches tall and share the same 89-inch width.

Can I rent a dumpster for weekly trash pickup?

Not from MAC Dumpsters. Everyday household and kitchen garbage belongs with regular garbage collection, and we don't run a trash route. We rent roll-offs for projects, from $375 for a 10 yard, and long-term roll-off service for businesses, set up by phone at (410) 205-5330.

What kind of dumpster do contractors use?

Contractors use roll-offs, usually 15 or 20 yards, and swap them out as they fill. At MAC Dumpsters a swap costs the same as the rental for that size and comes with fresh tonnage. Contractors can call (410) 205-5330 for special pricing and terms.

Do you rent permanent dumpsters?

MAC Dumpsters offers long-term commercial service: a roll-off that stays at your business on a long-term agreement and gets swapped when it's full. Pricing, pickup frequency and contract terms are set up by phone at (410) 205-5330. We don't offer front-load or rear-load route bins.
