A roof tear-off fills a dumpster by weight, not by space, so MAC Dumpsters sizes roofing jobs by the square. Our 15 yard at $450 takes about 13 squares of architectural shingles before overage, our 10 yard about 10 and our 20 yard about 20. Every size comes with 14 days and no delivery fee across Baltimore City and Baltimore, Harford and Anne Arundel counties, from a roll-off dumpster company run by its owners in Middle River, MD.

Roofing topics this page answers

This page covers roofing dumpster rental from MAC Dumpsters in Middle River, MD. It explains what a tear-off puts in the container, how much shingles weigh per square, and how many squares of architectural or 3-tab shingles each of our three sizes takes before overage. It also covers second layers, slate and tile, what to keep out of the load, and when to have the container delivered, for roof jobs across the Baltimore area.

What a roof tear-off puts in the container

Shingles and the tear-off around them

Most of a roofing load is old shingles, torn off in sheets and broken pieces. Around them come the underlayment, flashing, drip edge, ridge caps and the nails that held it all down. If the decking is bad, sheets of rotted plywood come off too.

Roof jobs that fill a container:

  • Full asphalt shingle replacement
  • Two-layer tear-off
  • Partial roof or one-slope replacement
  • Garage or shed roof
  • Porch or addition roof
  • Storm-damaged roof section
  • Decking replacement

Why a roofing container looks half empty

Shingles are dense. A roof's worth of them lies flat and packs tight, so a container can reach its included tons while it still looks half full. That's where most roofing overage comes from: the load looks like there's room, and there is room, but the weight is already spent. Size by the square count, not by how the container looks.

How much does a square of shingles weigh?

A square of 3-tab asphalt shingles weighs about 175 pounds, and a square of architectural shingles weighs about 300 pounds. A square covers 100 square feet of roof. At MAC Dumpsters, those are the weights we size by, and a second layer on the same roof roughly doubles them.

Bundles to squares

Most shingles are sold three bundles to a square, but some heavier architectural lines use more. Check the wrapper on a leftover bundle or the invoice from the original job. Count the squares on the roof, not the bundles, when you size the container.

Weight per square, by shingle type

Architectural shingles are the thick, layered kind with a shadow line. They're about 300 pounds per square. Flat, single-layer 3-tab shingles are about 175 pounds per square. That's why the same container takes nearly twice as many squares of 3-tab as architectural.

How many squares of shingles fit in a dumpster?

A 15 yard dumpster takes about 13 squares of architectural shingles or about 22 squares of 3-tab before it passes its 2 tons included. At MAC Dumpsters, a 10 yard takes about 10 architectural or 17 3-tab squares, and a 20 yard takes about 20 architectural or 34 3-tab squares. Those counts are for one layer.

Size Included Architectural squares 3-tab squares
10 yard 1.5 tons About 10 About 17
15 yard 2 tons About 13 About 22
20 yard 3 tons About 20 About 34

15 yard for most house roofs

The 15 yard dumpster rental is the one we put on most single-layer roofs: up to about 13 architectural squares or about 22 of 3-tab. That covers a lot of ranchers, split-levels and townhomes. It's the roofing workhorse on our lot.

MAC Dumpsters 10 yard roll-off dumpster

10 yard for small or single-layer tear-offs

The 10 yard roll-off fits a garage roof, a porch, one slope or a small single-layer house roof: about 10 architectural squares or 17 of 3-tab. At 12 feet long, it's also the easiest to place on a short driveway.

MAC Dumpsters 20 yard roll-off dumpster

20 yard for large or two-layer roofs

The 20 yard roll-off takes about 20 architectural squares or 34 of 3-tab, with 3 tons included. Book it for a big roof, or for a two-layer tear-off, where the weight per square doubles.

Can I put two layers of shingles in one dumpster?

Yes, but plan for about half the squares. Two layers roughly double the weight per square, so a two-layer architectural roof weighs about 600 pounds per square. At MAC Dumpsters, that means a 20 yard takes about 10 squares of two-layer architectural before it passes its 3 tons included.

Running the layer math

Take the one-layer count for your size and roughly halve it. A 15 yard goes from about 13 architectural squares to about 6, and from about 22 3-tab squares to about 11. If the roof is bigger than that, step up a size or plan on overage at $125 per ton.

When overage makes the bigger size cheaper

Say you tear off 20 squares of architectural shingles, about 3 tons. In a 15 yard, that's one ton over the 2 included, so $450 plus $125, or $575. In a 20 yard, it's within the 3 tons included, so $550. The bigger container costs $25 less and leaves room to spare. Our guide to how tonnage works explains how the load is weighed.

Slate, tile and what stays off the load

Slate and tile roofs

Slate and tile weigh far more per square than asphalt shingles. We don't publish square counts for them. Call (410) 205-5330 and we'll size a slate or tile job with you before you book.

Keeping the roofing load clean

Keep chimney brick out of the container. If the chimney is coming down with the roof, the brick needs its own plan, because brick, concrete, block, asphalt and dirt can't go in any MAC container. Paint, hazardous materials and anything with freon, like an old rooftop air conditioner, are out too.

Why shingles stop at the rim

Load shingles level with the top of the container, not above it. Shingles slide, and loose debris can fall onto the road, so an overfilled container may not be hauled until the extra comes off. On most roofs, you'll reach the weight before the rim anyway.

Placement and permits for a roof job

Set the container as close to the roofline as the truck allows, so shingles can go straight from the roof into the box. Our hook-lift truck typically needs 12 to 14 feet overhead, which rules out spots right under the eaves on some houses, plus about 50 feet of straight-line room and 10 to 12 feet of width. Call if it's tight.

On a private driveway, most areas we serve need no permit. On the street, a right-of-way permit is needed, and the roofer or homeowner gets it. In Baltimore City, the standard processing time is 15 days. Our permit requirements by jurisdiction page lists each issuing office.

When to have a roofing dumpster delivered

Book delivery for the day before the tear-off or the morning it starts. Most roofs come off in a day or two, so a container kept 3 days or less can use code 3DAY for $50 off. If the job runs long for weather, the 14 days cover it, and each day after that is $25.

How a roofing rental works

Book online or call (410) 205-5330. Order by noon for the best chance at same-day delivery, depending on availability. Our hook-lift truck slides the container straight back into place. The crew loads it as the roof comes off, and a text brings the truck back for pickup. We weigh the load at the landfill and bill any overage after the dump. We dispose of every load according to local and state regulations.

Roofing dumpster prices

A roofing rental runs $375 to $550, depending on the size your square count calls for. Each price covers delivery, pickup, 14 days and the included tonnage, with no delivery fee. Overage is $125 per ton, so one ton over adds $125. The full list of charges is on our pricing and rental terms.

Why roofers book MAC's containers

Sized by your square count

You give us the square count, the shingle type and the number of layers, and we give you the size. There's no guessing from the size of the house.

Three sizes, three weight tiers

Each size up adds included weight: 1.5, 2 and 3 tons. For roofing, where weight decides the size, that ladder matters more than the extra room.

A quick job costs less

Most tear-offs finish in a day or two. Keep the container 3 days or less and code 3DAY takes $50 off the price.

More for roofers and roof projects

Roofers running several jobs a month can see how we handle repeat work on our contractor dumpster service page. If the roof is part of a larger remodel, our construction dumpster rental page sizes the rest of the debris.

Where our roofing containers go

We bring roofing dumpsters to Baltimore City and across Baltimore, Harford and Anne Arundel counties, including Middle River, Perry Hall, Bel Air and Glen Burnie. There's no delivery fee to any address in that area. See our full service area.

Roofing dumpster questions

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Most shingles come three bundles to a square, which covers 100 square feet. Some heavier architectural shingles use four. Check the bundle wrapper to be sure.

Can roofing nails go in a dumpster?

Yes. The nails that come off with the shingles go in with the rest of the tear-off. Sweep the yard and driveway with a magnet when the job is done to catch the ones that fall.

Can I put chimney brick in a roofing dumpster?

No. Brick can't go in a MAC Dumpsters container, and neither can concrete, block, asphalt or dirt. If the chimney is coming down, keep the brick separate from the shingles.

Can slate roofing go in a dumpster?

Call before you book. Slate is much heavier per square than asphalt shingles, so MAC Dumpsters sizes slate and tile jobs by phone instead of publishing square counts.

When should a roofing dumpster be delivered?

Have it delivered the day before the tear-off or early the morning it starts. The container should be in place before the first shingle comes off, so the crew can load straight from the roof.
